Florida Friendly Landscape Design Principles
As a Certified Xeriscape Advisor, I prioritize eco-friendly solutions, native plants, and water conservation. We believe in landscaping that enhances beauty while protecting the environment.
RIGHT PLANT, RIGHT PLACE
Select plants for specific site conditions. Group plants according to water needs. Replace problem plants with native or low maintenance non-native species.
WATER EFFICIENCY
Try to create yards that thrive on rain alone. Irrigate only when your lawn and landscapes
are just starting to wilt. Apply 1/2-3/4” of water.
MULCH
Maintaining a 2-3” layer of mulch will help retain soil moisture, present erosion and suppress weeds.
ATTRACT WILDLIFE
Florida ranks third in the nation for wildlife diversity. Use plants that provide food, water and shelter.
CONTROL YARD PESTS RESPONSIBLY
Unwise use of pesticides can harm people, pets, beneficial organisms and the environment.
RECYCLE
Leave grass clippings on the lawn to provide nutrients and to reduce solid waste disposal.
REDUCE STORMWATER RUNOFF
Use porous materials such as paver stones, bricks and walks. Direct down spouts into
plant areas instead of onto driveways. Create swales or terracing to catch and filter stormwater.
PROTECT THE WATERFRONT
Plant native shoreline and aquatic plants along or instead or sea walls. Establish no fertilizer zones along shoreline twenty feet up from the water’s edge.
